the essential is-ness

of things

an exhibition of drawings by David Pugh

a glimpse into a unique world of vision

David Pugh lives and works in the city of St. Albans, where he is a member of the Camphill

St. Albans community. He lives without hearing or speech and makes his home

independently but with support in one of two shared living houses, along with four other

residents. He has strong interests in theatre, ballet and chess and is a member of the local

chess club where he is renowned as a formidable player. As an artist, craftsman and weaver

he makes a substantial contribution to the life and work of the community, based in the art

studio and weaving workshop. The present exhibition consists of

just 30 carefully selected pieces out of the hundreds in his portfolio.

His is a unique vision, and seeing his works gives us an

opportunity to share his world and to experience through his eyes the marvellous

beauty and 'is-ness' of things, be they living, breathing animals, birds and human figures,

or simple everyday objects such as clocks, a bicycle and chess pieces, along with

astronomical diagrams and still life renderings from nature which are executed with almost

scientific precision and delicacy. We hope you will enjoy what you see when the doors of

David's world of perception open to let you in.
