Living, Learning, Working and
Enjoying Life Together
Freedom, Choice, Independence and
Mutual Support
Camphill St. Albans is about togetherness, friendship, mutual support, open opportunity and respect for the individual, helping people to change and develop. Since its beginning in 1997 many adults with learning disabilities and mental health problems have been helped to grow and move forward as individuals in close integration with their surroundings, and have been encouraged and supported to take their place independently within the wider community as friends, neighbours and citizens, while at the same time being able to rely on a secure and holistic network of support.
Space for Living
All accommodation is close to the centre of St. Albans and comprises two houses for shared living in small groups, known as Lily House and Townsend, and a number of smaller houses and apartments for couples and single occupants. Members of the co-worker team are always close by, either living in the group houses or in neighbouring houses and flats, and this enables residents to feel secure.
One resident says, “The Camphill community is a supportive family within which I feel safe. This gives me confidence to go out into the world, to go shopping and to experience various work settings. This is only possible because in the Camphill community there are people who know who I am and so I am able to make this transition into the wider world.”
Person centredness
Residents in Camphill St. Albans have their own comprehensive personal plan to ensure that they receive appropriate support whenever they need it, with the emphasis on working towards greater independence in all life skills. Each person is in regular contact with the team of care and support workers and one or more of them will be specifically assigned to support the individual.
Learning to Work
We provide a range of work and training opportunities through Apt Creations (Artists Producing Together) which has grown into a thriving social enterprise. People can experience a range of activities as part of a varied weekly timetable.
Social and Cultural Life
There is always plenty going on in Camphill St. Albans and everyone can enjoy a varied social and cultural life in the houses and common spaces of the community. Residents are supported to participate in activities of their choice either with others or individually.
We have become firmly established as an integral part of our local community and we work actively to promote community values, with close and ever growing links with the people of the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Giving the Individual a Voice
Social development, artistic creativity, gaining practical expertise and concern for the environment all play a strong part in Camphill life. We support people to be involved in shaping the community, and to reflect and comment on it.
Camphill St. Albans is for people who are seeking to take a step forward in their lives, to find a new way of self-development through living, learning and working with others. They will be able to find what they are looking for and discover that new opportunities can open up for them.
